SLEEP DENTAL SYDNEY
IV SEDATION (INTRAVENOUS)
If fear or anxiety ,have prevented you from going to the dentist for a examination or undergoing dental procedures, then the sleep dental solution may be ideal for you.
MPW Dentistry, a Certified Dental Board Sedation practice, is one of the very few dental practices in Sydney that offers intravenous sedation dentistry in our rooms, on a daily basis. Our IV sedation is performed by Dr Walker (who teaches other dentists how to do it!), so we don’t need to call in an external sedationist/anaesthetist.
WHAT IS DENTAL IV SEDATION?
IV sedation in dentistry is a safe and pain free solution for particularly anxious patients who may otherwise be prepared to suffer tooth ache worsening oral health problems and eventually other related health issues, rather than visiting their dentist.
During IV sedation, sleep dental drugs are delivered into your bloodstream. These place you into a deep state of relaxation, making it possible for you to have the treatment you need without feeling any pain or anxiety.
WHEN CAN DENTAL IV SEDATION BE USED?
On request, and where indicated, Dr Walker administers IV Sedation for almost all dental procedures including dental check-ups, fillings, wisdom teeth removal and cosmetic dentistry.
CAN ANY DENTIST DELIVER DENTAL IV SEDATION?
No. Intravenous sedation in dentistry must be administered by a qualified sedationist or anaesthetist. Unlike MPW Dentistry, most dental surgeries in Sydney are unable to offer on-site IV sleep dental procedures – they need to call in an external anaesthetist or an outside sedationist or be restricted to booking future times. As we provide IV sedation every day patients have greater access to the resources and can be treated as a routine procedure like other patients who go to the dentist and have local anaesthetic to have their dentistry done.
To have sedation included as an approved area of practice by the Dental Board of Australia, a dentist must hold an approved qualification such as the Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation from Westmead Hospital and the University of Sydney, or a substantially equivalent qualification. As well has having these credentials, Dr Walker is a lecturer at the University of Sydney Sedation Diploma courses and is the senior clinical Associate and external Examiner in Intravenous Sedation. He has also introduced undergraduates at Westmead Dental Hospital to sedation practices – so you know you are in good hands!
When performed by a specially trained dentist, like Dr Walker, intravenous sedation dentistry is considered to be safe. We always provide pre and post appointment instructions for you to follow. They can also be downloaded here:
These include:
- notifying staff about any medications being taken
- not consuming food or drink for 6 hours prior to appointment
- wearing appropriate clothing and what to remove, i.e. jewellery and makeup
- that you can’t drive or catch public transport home afterwards

IMPORTANT
We are a certified Dental Board Sedation practice offering Intravenous Sedation on a daily basis unlike other practices that bring in an anaesthetist on a monthly basis to perform their sedations. We receive referrals from many dentists for sedation & General Anaesthesia. So if you enquire elsewhere please ensure, for your security, that it is to a dental board approved practice.
We offer General Anaesthesia on a regular basis at our rooms and we are one of the very, very few in the Sydney metropolitan area.
